Apply to the 2018 CMDS Summer School
Probably the most severe crisis journalism has been facing in the past dec=
ade is the funding crisis. Media outlets are testing subscription and memb=
ership models alongside with new advertising models. Some rely on funding=
 from philanthropies to keep doing public service journalism=2C which is n=
ot commercially viable. The aim of this practice-based course is to provid=
e participants with in-depth understanding of the main changes in funding=
 journalism=2C including the key areas of growth and the fastest expanding=
 players in media as well as the role funding plays in capturing independe=
nt media. Participants will have the opportunity to benefit from skill-bui=
lding sessions in media management=2C fundraising techniques and business=
 models adapted to the digital age.
The course will take place July 2-6=2C 2018 at Central European University=
=2C Budapest=2C Hungary and it is intended for media managers=2C journalis=
ts and donors but researchers are also welcome to apply. The tuition fee f=
or the summer course is EUR 550. Early bird fee is EUR 500.

European Journalism in the Digital Age: Rights and Risks
Applications are now open to our certificate-based legal training program=
 for journalists=2C civil society advocates and media lawyers in Central a=
nd Southeastern Europe. The European Journalism in the Digital Age is a un=
ique =E2=80=98hybrid=E2=80=99-style online and offline course that focuses=
 on providing participants with the fundamentals of media and freedom of e=
xpression law in the digital age and practical solutions for combatting th=
reats from litigants=2C hackers=2C and hostile governments. The course see=
ks to create a network of committed journalists=2C advocates and lawyers t=
o help defend journalism=2C media independence and democracy generally. Th=
e course features an intensive two-day workshop in the Balkans region (loc=
ation TBA) on the weekend of May 25-27=2C 2018=2C followed by nine weeks o=
f top-level online instruction.Tuition for the 10-week course is free. All=
 expenses will be paid by the program.

risis journalism has been facing in the past decade is the <strong>funding=
 crisis</strong>. Media outlets are testing subscription and membership mo=
dels alongside with new advertising models. Some rely on funding from phil=
anthropies to keep doing public service journalism=2C which is not commerc=
ially viable. The aim of this <strong>practice-based course</strong> is to=
 provide participants with in-depth understanding of <strong>the main chan=
ges in funding journalism</strong>=2C including the <strong>key areas of g=
rowth</strong> and the<strong> fastest expanding players in media</strong>=
 as well as the role funding plays in capturing independent media. Partici=
pants will have the opportunity to benefit from <strong>skill-building ses=
sions in media management=2C fundraising techniques and business models</s=
