Battling a "Gre= en Glacier"

Is there such a thing as too many trees? It might be a surprise to lear= n that one of the biggest threats to Great Plains grasslands is the advanc= e of eastern redcedar—a tree planted across the region to provide sh= ade=2C windbreaks=2C natural fences=2C and shelter for calves. Unfortunate= ly=2C redcedars are now turning prairies into woodlands=2C setting up an a= ll-hands-on-deck battle to maintain and restore the grasslands that humans= and wildlife depend on. Read the feature from the latest issue of Living Bird.

Which= Species Is This?

Here's a bird that looks like it's found its Halloween costume= already. In reality=2C this male is probably displaying for a nearby fema= le by leaning forward and extending its ruff=2C or neck feathers. Thi= s species is common year-round throughout Mexico=2C and by Halloween=2C mo= st individuals will have departed south from their breeding range in the e= xtreme southwestern U.S. Like other members of the genus Molothrus=2C they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds instead raising their= own brood. Can you name this somewhat spooky species?
