CMDS in 2018: Studying Media and Power from the Cradle of Illib= eralism
=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09
=09 =09=09=09 =09=09=09=09
The study of power is arguably the most releva= nt contribution that people in knowledge creation can make. In the past tw= o years=2C we=2C media researchers=2C experts and journalists at the Center for Media=2C Data and Society have been doing just that= from Hungary=2C the cradle of today=E2=80=99s illiberalism. In the last a= cademic year=2C we expanded Media Influence Matrix=2C = our flagship project that studies the impact that shifts in policy=2C= politics=2C funding and technology have on news media and journalism. Wor= k on 20+ countries is ongoing. In the knowledge sharing area=2C we further= streamlined our workshop and course offering=2C focusing= on practical skills that are most in-demand. Our summer school intr= oduced successful journalism business models to an audience of journalists= =2C media managers and donor organizations. With the participation of seve= ral top legal and policy experts=2C we established the CMDS Media= Policy Hub with a mission to influence policy debates and advoca= te progressive media policy models.

=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09
3D""
This year's CMDS Summer Sc= hool is about trust. Some say=2C the deep crisis of public trust journalism is facing is more serious than the financial crisi= s that has clobbered news media over the course of the past decade. But th= e two=2C in fact=2C are deeply connected: subscriptions or various forms o= f memberships seem to be the only business model that works in this new er= a of journalism=2C and there is a close link between peop= le=E2=80=99s decision to pay for news and the level of trust they have in= the news product they buy and the people who make it. Thus=2C eff= ectively engaging with audiences is key in keeping news media and= journalism initiatives afloat.
The aim of this course is to provide participants with in-depth understand= ing of the most effective methods of audience engagement= in journalism. The course will have a strong practical element focusing o= n skills=2C strategies and tactics used to attract audiences to quality jo= urnalism.
