Yesterday was Karim Naguib's funeral service in Cairo. I watched it on YouTube, a whole new level of surrealism. Sadness over Karim's suicide and worry about Rime and Ahmad has been looming. I just learned from Mama that Rime actually saw the body twice, the most recent in the airport which left her more unsettled. It doesn't seem the wider family knew exactly that he hung himself. I should find the courage and send Nada in London and Naguib and Hanan in Cairo some flowers.
I also just read that Ian Black passed away today. Meeting Ian during my mid-twenties on Cairo has been a real pleasure. He listened enthusiastically and seriously as I spoke about the coming revolution. We met last on Shepherd Hotel and sat not far from where I used to sit with Naguib Mahfouz years before.
The world I grew up in is dying. It truly feels like a new beginning will come if my bureaucracy wait is over, and when my parents finally die, hopefully not before several years. We have good genes and have lead a healthy life. There should be time to be together again. They deserve a long break.
