plans.html">human powered student building</a> are reserved for <a href=3D"=
http://www.humanpowerplant.be/2017/06/power-generation-floors.html">communa=
l energy production</a>. </span><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">How long t=
he students need to exercise on these floors depends on their demand for po=
wer. Because the energy users are also the energy producers, there=E2=80=99=
s a strong incentive to reduce energy demand.&nbsp;</span><span style=3D"fo=
nt-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></p>
<p style=3D"text-align: center;"><span style=3D"font-size: 13pt;"><strong>*=

<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">For each energy using activity, we calc=
ulated the amount of student-hours that's required to produce the energy. W=
e assume that every student can produce 100 watt-hour (Wh) of power per hou=
r. <br /></span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">If an activity (such as refrigeration) =
requires 40 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day, this corresponds to 400 student</=
span><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">-hours of power production per day, o=
r one hundred people exercising for four hours.</span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">We can then calculate the total amount =
of hours per day that each student needs to produce power for the community=
. We also take into account 50% energy losses.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p style=3D"text-align: center;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;"><strong>H=
ow Many Hours per Day?<br /></strong></span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">The communal power producing floors sup=
ply energy for fridges, hot showers, toilets, dishwasher, hair dryers, comm=
unal lighting and electricity, water pumps, and Internet.</span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">The working schedules are negotiated an=
d set up by the students themselves, who are in total control of their huma=
n powered community. For now, w</span><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">e ca=
lculated three different scenario's, based on three hypothetical levels of =
energy demand. </span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">The most energy efficient scenario requ=
ires each student to produce power for <span style=3D"background-color: #df=
ffbf;">1.5 hour per day</span>. In this scenario, the showers are cold, the=
re are no hair dryers, the dishes are done by hand with cold water, and the=
clothes are drying outside in the rain.</span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">A second scenario adds a 1-minute hot s=
hower every day, as well as limited hair drying. This doubles the daily wor=
k duty to <span style=3D"background-color: #dfffbf;">3 hours per student pe=
r day</span>. The third scenario doubles the hot shower length to 2 minutes=
per day, and introduces a dishwasher and (limited) clothes drying. It requ=
ires every student to produce power for <span style=3D"background-color: #d=
fffbf;">6 hours per per day</span>.</span></p>
<p style=3D"text-align: center;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;"><strong>H=
ow Many People?<br /></strong></span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Energy demand varies throughout the day=
and the night. To avoid night shifts and to spread out the workforce more =
evenly over time, the human powered student building is equipped with a gra=
vity battery in one of the former elevator shafts.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Assuming 10 hours of continuous energy =
production per day, how many people would be producing power simultaneously=
? In the most energy conscious scenario, the answer is 110 people. That's <=
span style=3D"background-color: #dfffbf;">roughly 1 in 7 students</span>. <=
/span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">In the moderate scenario, it's 220 peop=
le (<span style=3D"background-color: #dfffbf;">more than 1 in 4 students</s=
pan>) and in the 'energy-intensive' scenario, it's 440 people (<span style=
=3D"background-color: #dfffbf;">more than 1 in 2 students</span>). </span><=
span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">The last scenario surpasses the maximum pow=
er capacity of the human power plant, which is <a href=3D"http://www.humanp=
owerplant.be/2017/06/power-generation-floors.html">400 people producing pow=
er simultaneously</a>. </span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Communal energy use in the student buil=
ding is 112 kWh per day in the first scenario (150 watt-hour per person per=
day), 224 kWh in the second scenario (300 Wh per person per day), and 448 =
kWh in the third scenario (450 Wh per person per day). <br /></span></p>
<p style=3D"text-align: center;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;"><strong>O=
ther Duties</strong></span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Note that this only concerns the commun=
al energy use of the building. </span><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Stud=
ents also need to produce energy <a href=3D"http://www.humanpowerplant.be/2=
017/05/for-rent-750-human-powered-student-rooms.html">in their own rooms</a=
>. In this case, timing and duration are entirely up to the student, not to=
the community as a whole. </span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">We have estimated a maximum of <span st=
yle=3D"background-color: #dfffbf;">1-2 hours of personal power production p=
er day</span> (100-200 Wh), which is sufficient for lighting, computing and=
music if energy efficient devices are used. <br /></span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Communal and private work duties combin=
ed are thus 2,5 to 3,5 hours per day in the first scenario, 4-5 hours per d=
ay in the second scenario, and 7-8 hours per day in the third scenario.</sp=

<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Furthermore, there are work duties for =
clothes washing, biogas plant operation, and kitchen work. <a href=3D"http:=
//www.humanpowerplant.be/2017/05/communal-shower-laundry-floors.html">Cloth=
es washing</a> is estimated to be 1 to 2 hours per student per week, and is=
not powered by communal energy production.</span><span style=3D"font-size:=

<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">There is a two-weekly work shift for sh=
opping, cooking and dish washing (if this happens by hand). Finally, once p=
er month, every student needs to work an 8-hour shift in the biogas power p=

d throughout the building. A vacuum toilet requires very little water but i=
t needs roughly 2 watt-hour of energy per flush. </span></p>

this comes down to 10 watt-hour per person per day, or 7,5 kWh per day for =
750 students. This means we need 7.5 people exercising for 10 hours to powe=

community have communal spaces where students can come together. These spa=
ces need lighting and possibly energy for other devices, such as computers.=

<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">When they are in their room, students n=
eed to power their computers themselves. When they are in a communal space,=
the energy is taken from the communal power producing floors. </span></p>
<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">It's hard to predict how this dynamic w=
ill play out, for now we estimate a need for 100 student-hours, less than <=
span style=3D"background-color: #dfffbf;">20 minutes of power production pe=
r student per day</span>. More energy use in communal spaces would raise th=
e communal working duty and decrease the individual efforts. </span></p>

<p><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">Overheating is a serious risk for power=
producing people. Using fans, it takes 10 watts of energy to cool one stud=
ent. Assuming an average amount of 250 energy generating students, an addit=
ional 25 students would be needed to cool them in summer, while these 25 st=
udents would need another 2 to 3 students to do the same to them. </span></=

ooling is limited to 200 student-hours. During very hot days, we lower ener=
