Objective

*Project28 *aims at creating a wide and sustainable decentralised telecom infrastructure based primarily on WiFi (and possibly other types of) mesh networking in Egypt

Strategies

Open

Open aims to removing all legal barriers standing in the way of a legal Wifi mesh in Egypt.

Protect

Protect aims at offering legal and other forms of empowerment to individuals and groups exercising their lawful, but not yet legal, rights to privacy, communication, and economic autonomy

Construct

Construct aims at creating a dynamic that allows for the emergence of a Wifi mesh

Criteria for choosing hardware

  • Works with OpenWRT (FreiFunk folks offered making OpenWRT work for the most popular hardware in Egypt)
  • Legally available (with original firmware) and affordable in Egypt

Wireless operating system:

  • Freifunk: Based on the OpenWRT, Frei-funk firmware brings easy OLSR support to MIPS-based consumer access points, such as the Linksys WRT54G / WRT54GS / WAP54G, Siemens SE505, and others. By simply flashing one of these APs with the Freifunk firmware, you can rapidly build a self-forming OLSR mesh. Freifunk is not currently available for x86 architecture machines (need to check that out).
