Dear All,=0AWe met with Leil from Lebanon/Barcelona at the commune today t=
he 11th of March. to discuss the start of an Indymedia chapter in Cairo. T=
his email is sent to you because you were either in the meeting or interes=
ted in participating in the project.=0A=0AA meeting on Sunday 6pm is sched=
uled at the commune to set up a team and work mechanism for the Indymedia =
Cairo chapter.=0AMeanwhile and until then=EF=BB=BF=0AThe following are bri=
ef minutes for what was discussed at the meeting:=0A=0A=3D=3D=3D=3D=0ALeil=
started by giving a brief introduction of how Indymedia.org started out i=
n 1999: during the Seattle events, many activists were furious about the m=
edia coverage and they decided to work on what they called: don't hate the=
media, be the media. and they created Indymedia.=0A=0ASince then it has h=
ad many chapters around the world, in the Arab world there was two: Indyme=
dia Beirut which Leil was active in but ended due to the absence of active=
members, and Indymedia Jerusalem which was split over internal Palestinia=
n quarrels!=0A=0AThey had tried to start up one in Iraq, but they couldn't=
get a full agreement on the Indymedia core principles in the Iraqi group =
so it never made it.=0A=0AThe core principles are: no censorship except on=
racist or sexist issues, to be completely open to people's entries and re=
ports.=0AThese principles along with Indymedia's big presence attracts Tro=
lls (fake news distributors!) `so they created mechanisms in the page to d=
eal with trolls and to have an editorial team which leads the reporting.=0A=
=0AAmr raised a question of having already a hub of reporting news from Eg=
ypt to the outside world which is Global Voices Online. This opened a disc=
ussion on GlobalVoices Online vs Indymedia. It was decided IM is a better=
preference because GV has two main issues: central control, and liberal c=
hoices overriding truth of reporting.=0A=0ALeil also discussed using webst=
reaming on minipimer.tv which is open source software for streaming, eithe=
r to embed it, if technically possible, or to set it up somewhere else and=
advertise it on Indymedia.=0A=0AGroup agrees to attempt at setting up Ind=
ymedia, Leil says he already sent Indymedia.org asking to set up a local c=
hapter. We briefly discuss whether egypt chapter or cairo chapter, then de=
cide on Cairo because most of our focus will be local, and it allows other=
groups to set up other cities on their own, also you can always report ab=
out other cities from cairo.=0A=0AAgreed on cairo.indymedia.com and as we =
wait for Indymedia.org's response we need to choose a team! so we decide o=
n a Meeting on Sunday 6pm to take more direct steps.=0A=0ALastly, Leil ask=
s for another person to coordinate with him correspondence with indymedia.=
org, we decide it will be Lobna.=0A=3D=3D=3D=3D=0A=0ABest, Mostafa=0A=0A=
