Historic boats are back
With the anniversary of James Brindley=E2=80=99s 300th birthday=2C the imp=
ortance of remembering the history of our waterways is even more significa=
nt at this year's biggest inland waterways festival.
A popular tradition at Crick=2C our historic boat display will be returnin=
g for another year. A brief history on the six narrowboats making the jour=
ney to join us is listed below:
Purton
Purton was built in Cheshire in September 1936 for the Grand Union Canal C=
arrying company. In 1941=2C Purton was involved in an accident on the Erew=
ash canal and was stuck there for over a week. A working boat for 62 years=
=2C Purton has now had work done to preserve and maintain the vessel.

Sculptor
A Small Northwich motor boat=2C Sculptor was built in 1935 and carried gen=
eral goods from the Midlands to London. In 1943=2C it was commissioned by=
the Missionary of War Transport for a fire fighting facility. After the w=
ar=2C it returned to his original fleet before becoming a maintenance boat=
=2E Since 1985=2C Sculptor has retired and been a floating exhibit at the Ca=
nal Museum in Stoke Bruerne. Sculptor also featured on Liz McIvor=E2=80=99=
s BBC programme Canals: The Making of a Nation.
Algate and Angel
In 1948=2C Algate was leased to Willow Wren Canal Transport Services and w=
orked up to Whitworths flour mills until the sixties. Aldgate was then sol=
d and used on the phosphorus waste run to Dudley Port. After being abandon=
ed on a disused arm and allowed to sink=2C Algate was recovered=2C rebuilt=
and sold to Colne Valley Carriers in the early 1980=E2=80=99s. Algate and=
Angel became a pair in 2007 but separated again in 2008. The two boats ca=
n both be seen together at Crick 2016.

Nutfield and Raymond
The last working boat to be built in the UK=2C Raymond was built in Brauns=
ton in 1958. Nutfield=2C in 1936=2C was built for the Grand Union Company.=
Delivering coal=2C the two boats were brought together by Blue Line in 19=
68 and remained a pair until canals stopped being used to carry cargo. Nu=
tfield was sold and used as a passenger trip boat while Raymond deteriorat=
ed to the point of sinking in 1993. Friends of Raymond took ownership of t=
he narrowboat and it underwent a total rebuild. The friends also acquired=
Nutfield and restoration is progressing slowly=2C reuniting one of the la=
st pairs to work on our canals.

With the anniversary of James Brindley&rsquo;s 300th&nbsp;birthday=2C the=
importance of <span style=3D"color:#0000CD">remembering the history of ou=
r waterways</span> is even more significant at this year&#39;s&nbsp;bigges=
t inland waterways festival.<br>
&nbsp;<br>
A popular tradition at Crick=2C our <span style=3D"color:#0000CD">historic=
boat display</span> will be returning for another year. A brief history o=
n the <span style=3D"color:#0000CD">six narrowboats</span> making the jour=
ney to join us is listed below:<br>
<br>
<span style=3D"font-size:14px"><strong>Purton</strong></span><br>
Purton was built in Cheshire in September 1936 for the Grand Union Canal C=
arrying company. In 1941=2C Purton was involved in an <span style=3D"color=
:#0000CD">accident on the Erewash canal and was stuck there for over a wee=
k</span>.&nbsp;A working boat for 62 years=2C Purton has now had work done=
to preserve and maintain the vessel.<br>

<span style=3D"font-size:14px"><strong>Sculptor</strong></span><br>
A Small Northwich motor boat=2C Sculptor was built in 1935 and carried&nbs=
p;general goods from the Midlands to London. In 1943=2C&nbsp;it was <span=
style=3D"color:#0000CD">commissioned by the Missionary of War Transport</=
span> for a fire fighting facility. After the war=2C it returned to his or=
iginal fleet before becoming a maintenance boat. Since 1985=2C&nbsp;Sculpt=
or has retired and been a&nbsp;floating exhibit at&nbsp;the Canal Museum i=
n Stoke Bruerne. <span style=3D"color:#0000CD">Sculptor also featured on&n=
bsp;Liz McIvor&rsquo;s BBC programme Canals: The Making of a Nation. </spa=
n><br>
&nbsp;<br>
<span style=3D"font-size:14px"><strong>Algate and Angel</strong></span><br=
>
In 1948=2C Algate was&nbsp;leased to Willow Wren Canal Transport Services=
and worked up to&nbsp;Whitworths flour mills until&nbsp;the sixties.&nbsp=
;Aldgate was then sold and used on the phosphorus waste run to Dudley Port=
=2E <span style=3D"color:#0000CD">After being abandoned on a disused arm and=
allowed to sink=2C&nbsp;Algate was recovered=2C rebuilt and sold</span> t=
o Colne Valley Carriers in&nbsp;the early 1980&rsquo;s. Algate and Angel b=
ecame a pair in 2007 but separated again in 2008. The two boats can both b=
e seen together at Crick 2016.<br>

<span style=3D"font-size:14px"><strong>Nutfield and Raymond</strong></span=
><br>
<span style=3D"color:#0000CD">The last working boat to be built in the UK<=
/span>=2C Raymond was built in Braunston in 1958. Nutfield=2C in 1936=2C w=
as built for the Grand Union Company. Delivering coal=2C the two boats wer=
e brought together by Blue Line in 1968 and remained a pair until&nbsp;can=
als stopped being used to carry cargo.&nbsp; Nutfield was sold and used as=
a passenger trip boat while&nbsp;Raymond deteriorated to the point of sin=
king in 1993. <span style=3D"color:#0000CD">Friends of Raymond took owners=
hip of the narrowboat and it underwent a total rebuild.</span> The friends=
also acquired Nutfield and restoration is progressing slowly=2C reuniting=
one of the last pairs to work on our canals.<br>
