Twitter cover letter

Dear Sirs

I am writing to apply for your advertised role of Legal Policy Specialist.

I spent the first years of my professional life editing, translating, and interpreting using Arabic, English and the little German I speak. One decade on, and with a range of experiences in human rights, social and political activism, and open and free knowledge, I still see myself as a translator. I have relied over and over on my ability to transfer meaning and value between three languages I speak fluently: geeky, legalese and human.

My experiences as a user and a mentor of people who want to use technology for affecting social change has given me a deeper appreciation for the value of a free and safe internet, as a platform and as a medium, adds to people's lives, particularly in difficult situations. My experiences in Egypt in the recent years have added to that a rights-based approach to a myriad of complex issues, including freedom of expression, freedom of information, and privacy, particularly in a situation where rule of law and due process are not at their best.

I am conversant in the legal framework, policy, and best and actual practices affecting free speech around the world, especially in the MENA region. I have been a source of contextualisation for Twitter and other internet companies in a number of instances. This makes me believe I will be quite comfortable and a useful addition to your team. I look for a chance to explore this possibility further.
