Windows is making big, big changes
After Windows 7,8 & 10, it looks like on June 24th we could be getting the =
latest software update to Microsoft=E2=80=99s operating system. It=E2=80=99=
s going to be called Windows 11! JUST KIDDING!
After seeing their market share decrease heavily over the past decade, part=
ly due to Chromebook=E2=80=99s recent dominance,

urprise. But, that doesn=E2=80=99t mean it=E2=80=99s not worth your attenti=

So, who=E2=80=99s headlining?
The big guests include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and chief product office=
r Panos Panay, plus others at the Windows event later this month.

Microsoft is expected to unveil big UI changes to its Windows operating sys=
tem, under the code name "Sun Valley". Either that or it=E2=80=99s a new fr=
agrance they are launching. We even got a little tease of a potentially new=
Windows Logo.
News reports indicate that Microsoft may allow apps from other companies an=
d payment platforms on its app store. This feels rather timely after what h=

o make Bitcoin legal tender. The move would open up financial services to t=

Nigeria vs Twitter
The Nigerian government has been the latest country to face criticism for i=
t=E2=80=99s new social media policies. The country moved to indefinitely su=
spend citizens from accessing Twitter (clearly not a fan of 180 characters)=
, following the company=E2=80=99s removal of one of the president's tweets

I know what you=E2=80=99re thinking: Pretty petty, right? Well, yes, but th=
is has set a very dangerous precedent. Blanket banning a social networking =
site isn=E2=80=99t new for many countries around the world (look at China).=
But it=E2=80=99s not just the deleted tweet that has everyone worried, mor=
e potential root causes,

The deleted tweet
What was said in the tweet? Well Muhammad Buhari, who has been president si=
nce 2015, suggested he would =E2=80=9Cpunish successionists=E2=80=9D follow=
ing recent dialogue

As soon as the tweet got deleted, the country acted. Nigeria=E2=80=99s Fede=
ral Ministry of Information & Culture (great title) announced a suspension =
of Twitter operations in Nigeria. The announcement,

made on Twitter. The irony isn=E2=80=99t lost on us either.
Swiftly followed by a new policy of arresting and prosecuting anyone using =
Twitter. It feels like no GIF is worth prison time.
Dangerous Twitter times.
The reaction to the ban caused mass outrage right across the globe. Osai Oj=
igho, director of Amnesty International in Nigeria criticized the decision.=

Whilst the decision is undeniably dangerous, a quick glance at recent repor=
ts would suggest that it is not wholly unsurprising. A 2020 Amnesty report =

journalists to intimidation, harassment and beatings.=E2=80=9D Twitter was=
n=E2=80=99t the start of the states controlling freedom of speech, it=E2=80=
=99s just now transferring onto social media. In 1 out of 3 countries syste=
matic social media restrictions have been reported since 2015.

Under The Surface
Many critics have been quick to point out another potential reason for Nige=
ria=E2=80=99s swift and aggressive ban on the platform which may be surpris=
ing.
Back in April, Twitter opened its first-ever African office

Ghana. Twitter cited Ghana=E2=80=99s free speech and online freedom record =
as well as =E2=80=9COpen Internet=E2=80=9D support as the reasons for the d=
ecisions.
Despite the reasoning, many in Nigeria considered the move to be a snub on =
the country. Nigeria=E2=80=99s information minister, the same one who annou=
nced the suspension, (what a guy) claimed that Twitter=E2=80=99s decision t=
o shun Nigeria was =E2=80=9Cdue to misrepresentation of the country by the =
media.=E2=80=9D Again...too ironic?
Keep an eye out for more updates on this story, we feel like this isn=E2=80=
=99t done just yet.
Etsy tries to join the cool kids.
Etsy, your mum=E2=80=99s favourite place for homemade stuff you don=E2=80=
=99t really need, last week took the jump to buy Depop, their cool kid cous=
in. The London-based application, famous for its street fashion and re-sale=
-mania, was snapped up for $1.65 billion.

This deal is by far the largest in Etsy's history; seven previous acquisiti=

26, that=E2=80=99s a huge amount of young customers buying on your platfor=
m. It=E2=80=99s a massive opportunity for both Etsy and Depop

the future home for fashion buyers.
Think smart
One of the large success stories of the resale market, Depop,

more than just simple fashion. Promoting messages of sustainability and div=
ersity, while also launching features linking Instagram handles and tips/tr=

t all, I only use it a few times a week.
At the heart of the app is vintage & on-trend fashion which for Etsy, is th=
e perfect market they need to tap into. Chief Executive Josh Silverman thin=
ks so too.

When an app is free, the obvious question is how does Depop make its money?=
From every purchase, it takes a % fee and it=E2=80=99s worked with huge pa=
rtners over the past few years. From Adidas to Ralph Lauren, it has become =
the go-to place if you=E2=80=99re looking for a non-fast-fashion shopping o=
utlet. How much was sold on Depop last year? $650 million.

=99t come close to what Depop can match. Bring them together and what do yo=
u get? A potentially huge player in the eCommerce world.
